How to Play Queens
Queens is a constraint satisfaction puzzle where you must place N queens on an N×N colored grid following specific rules.
Game Rules
- Each row must contain exactly one queen
- Each column must contain exactly one queen
- Each color region must contain exactly one queen
- Queens cannot touch each other horizontally, vertically, or diagonally
Controls
- Tap/Click: Cycle through states: Empty → X → Queen → Empty
- Arrow keys: Navigate between cells
- Space: Cycle cell state (same as tap)
- Enter: Toggle queen directly
- X key: Toggle X mark directly
Difficulty Levels
- Easy (5×5): 5 queens, 5 color regions
- Medium (6×6): 6 queens, 6 color regions
- Hard (8×8): 8 queens, 8 color regions
- Expert (9×9): 9 queens, 9 color regions
Solving Strategy
- Start constrained: Look for rows, columns, or regions with limited placement options
- Use X marks: Mark cells that cannot have queens to narrow down possibilities
- No guessing: Every puzzle has a unique solution that can be found through logic alone
